The Herald 26 May 2012: Dubliner Cian’s on top of the world after climbing Mount Everest for charity.

On the evening herald website today!
DUBLINER Cian O’Brolchain is on top of the world after bravely reaching the summit of Mount Everest.

The finance professional and tennis coach completed the gruelling adventure yesterday by summiting at 6am Nepal time (1am Irish time).

The death-defying climb was in aid of the Cystic Fibrosis Association of Ireland and its 32 Steps For CF campaign, which aims to improve lung transplant facilities in Ireland.

O’Brolchain’s climb was the culmination of a year-long fundraising drive.

The campaign has been running for the past year and has seen climbers raise money for the charity by scaling the highest peak in each of the 32 counties in Ireland.

O’Brolchain and a team of fellow mountaineers trekked through the night after leaving their base at Camp 4, which is perched 7,950 metres above sea level.

The final leg of their climb took around nine hours, with temperatures falling as low as –20C during the ascent.

Former UCD student O’Brolchain (32) was climbing with a group of mountaineers from all over the world, including Warner Rojas who became the first Costa Rican to scale Everest.

The group were led by highly experienced climber David Hamilton, who was celebrating his sixth time reaching the tallest point on earth.

All of the party have now returned to Camp 4 where they are taking a well deserved rest before continuing their descent.

Friends and family will be relieved to hear he has now passed below the 8,000 metre mark, dubbed the death zone by climbers due to the lack of oxygen and extreme cold.

Supporters have been leaving messages of support and congratulations on the Ireland to Everest Facebook page.

One well wisher said: “Well done Cian, such a wonderful achievement. Woohoooo. Glad to hear you’re safely back at camp 4. Congrats. Top of the world eh!”

Another fan from Australia called the achievement “Amazing!”
